Andrew Collberg (born September 18, 1987) is a musician living in Tucson, Arizona. He mostly plays piano, guitar, and drums, and sings. He has his own song writing project called "Andrew Collberg", and he also collaborates with many other musicians, both playing live and recording in studio.

Origin

Collberg was born in Lund, Sweden where his Swedish-born father and Louisiana-born mother were attending university.

Upon moving to the United States, Andrew continued to play the drums in his high school’s marching band. He began a stronger urge for playing music, and decided to broaden his own musicianship by learning how to play piano, guitar, & other instruments.^[1]

History

In 2006, when Collberg was 18 years old, he produced his first and self-titled album, Andrew Collberg. With his continuing passion, he recorded the album on his own, playing every instrument himself. This album got Collberg much attention and many local gigs as well. In 2008, Collberg released EPP, another album made in the same lo-fi sort of sound as his self-titled album, on which he also played all of the instruments. This also helped Collberg to meet other local musicians to play with him, both live and in the studio. 2010 was a big year for Collberg’s music career. On The Wreath was released on Le Pop Musik,^[2] and featured local musicians, including Calexico’s Joey Burns, who plays cello on “Wait inside”. The attention brought to Collberg won him Tucson’s Tammie award for his self-titled album.^[3] Skateboarder Ryan Decenzo used Colberg’s song “Man in the Moose Suit” in his Transworld Skate video “Hallelujah”.^[4]

Collberg was noticed not only for his own song writing, but as Tucson’s young prodigy drummer. He has played music with nearly every small and large act in Tucson. He has played drums for Tucson’s own Giant Sand and Marianne Dissard. Of his performances with Giant Sand, include opening for Rodriguez. Collberg’s own band has opened for acts like M. Ward and Violent Femmes. He has also contributed music for soundtracks for films such as Precious Knowledge and The Wine of Summer, the latter of which landed him a spot on the Internet Movie Database.^[5]

In 2011, Collberg released a 7-inch featuring two hits, as titled, “Dirty Wind/ Back on the Shore”.^[6] It was released on Ft. Lowell Records,^[7] which is a Tucson-based label which has also released some music from Giant Sand. “Back on the Shore” made it to New York Daily’s top 100 songs of 2012.^[8]

Present

Collberg plays drums in a jazz group, weekly, called Jazz Telephone.^[9] He also plays or has played drums for Young Hunter, Fur Family, and Golden Boots, a band which features his own current line-up’s guitar player as well as Dr. Dog’s Dimitri Manos and their sound engineer, Nathan Sabatino.

2013 brings his newest album, “Minds Hits” (Le Pop Musik). Songs from this album are what Andrew most frequently performs today, with his current line-up, Ryen Eggleston (guitar), Connor Gallaher (guitar), Sean Rogers (bass), and Jack Sterbis(drums). He also has recently recorded songs with such bands as The Preservation and Ohioan.
