Alma High School (Michigan)

Alma Senior High School, most often referred to as Alma High School or AHS, is Alma, Michigan's high school. Alma High School's mascot is a panther.

In addition to a full college preparatory curriculum with basic AP classes, the school offers seven business classes, several classes in the health sciences and agriculture, and a class in green building. The school's media center houses over 10,000 books and 53 computers.

Statistics

In 2007, AHS enrolled 715 students and had a graduation rate of 98%.[1]

Clubs

Extracurricular offerings include forensics (public speaking), math team, Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, student council, Model UN, Business Professionals of America, FCCLA, National Honor Society, and an agriculture club. Drama and yearbook are academic electives at AHS.

Band

The Alma High School Band is directed by Timothy Newman. Alma High School also has a jazz band, marching band, and pep band. The members of the jazz, marching, and pep bands must be members of the concert band in order to participate.

Accomplishments

Accomplishments of the 2009-10 Alma High School Band include Division 2 Rating at MSBOA Marching Festival with a 1 rating in the category of Music, 2nd place in class B at the Alma College Marching Festival, Most outstanding music in class B at the Alma College Marching Festival, Most outstanding music in class B at the DeWitt Marching Festival, Community Performances for the Alma Women's Club, Alma Home for the Holidays Celebration, and Masonic Pathways, and Reid Lott, a member of the band, was selected to perform with the MSBOA All-State Band and Central Michigan University Honors Band.[2]

Athletics

The sports offered at Alma High School include football, basketball, baseball, tennis, soccer, cross country, track, bowling, golf, swimming, wrestling, volleyball and softball. Cheerleading and Pompom squads are also fielded. Alma's fight song is based on Notre Dame's fight song, and is routinely played by the AHS Band at school events. Alma High School was home to the infamous golfer and tennis player, Tim Barczak.
