Ali Nuhu (born 18 March 1974) is a Nigerian actor, producer, director and television personality. Referred to in the media as the "King of Kannywood", "Sarki Ali" or "King Ali", he has appeared in hundreds of Hausa Language and English Language films, and earned numerous accolades. Nuhu has a significant following in Africa and the Nigerian diaspora worldwide. In terms of audience size and income, he has been described as one of the most successful film stars in the Northern Nigeria. As of 2008, Nuhu is co-chairman of the motion picture production company FKD productions and its subsidiaries. He regularly features in listings of the most influential people in Hausa culture.

Early life and family

Nuhu was born in Maiduguri, Borno, in northeastern Nigeria. His father Nuhu Puloma hailed from Balanga town of Gombe State and his mother Fatima Kardiram Digirema from Bamaw village of Borno State. He spent the highest number of his years growing in Yakasai, No Man's land and Hausawa areas of Kano town.[2] He attended Riga Special Primary School, Government Commercial Secondary School and Science Secondary School in Kano State where he obtained Primary and Secondary school certificate respectively. Nuhu is an alumnus of University of Jos where he obtained a degree in Geography. He later attended University of Southern California for a course in film production and cinematic arts.[3] Nuhu is married to to Maimuna Garba Ja Abdulkadir. The couple have two children, Fatima and Ahmad. [4]

Acting career

Nuhu entered the film industry as an actor which is regarded as a landmark in Hausa cinema. He Acted in hundreds of Hausa language and English language films.[5][6] Nuhu is the first Nigerian to successfully cut across the Northern and Southern axis of Nigeria as an actor. Having over a 160 Hausa and 110 English movies to his credit and 15 awards to with at least 10 from a competitive category. As a household name, he is presently one of the Ambassadors to Nigeria's leading Indigenous Telecom Network Company Globacom.

Ali Nuhu receives a considerable amount of media coverage in Nigeria, and is often referred to as "The King of Kannywood", "Sarki Ali" or "King Ali". Nigeria cites him as among of the present celebrities, with nine or ten films a year, constantly running television ads, print ads and gigantic billboards lining the streets of Nigerian cities. He is the object of a sometimes fanatical following, with a fan base estimated to exceed 98 million. Nuhu frequently appears on listings of the most popular, stylish and influential people in Nigeria. Nuhu has been brand ambassador of various campaigns, including Globacom[7] and Royco.

Awards and nominations

Nuhu is one of the most decorated actors in the Hausa Cinema. He won the Best Upcoming Actor award at the 3rd Africa Movie Academy Awards. He was nominated as the Best Actor in a supporting role at the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards and won Best Actor in a film at the 2013 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.[8][9]
