A Collection of Beatles Oldies (subtitled But Goldies!) is a compilation album by the English rock band the Beatles. Issued in the United Kingdom in December 1966, it features hit singles and other songs released by the group between 1963 and 1966. The album was also released in Australia, Mexico, West Germany, Czechoslovakia, Spain, and the Philippines.[2]

Background

The release of this album was the result of EMI not having any new material by the Beatles for the 1966 Christmas season in the manner of the previous three years.[1]

A cover of Larry Williams' "Bad Boy" was the sole new track for the UK market. It had been released in the United States, however, on the Capitol album Beatles VI in June 1965.[3] Most of the other songs had been released as singles.

"A Collection of Beatles Oldies" has yet to be issued on a legitime CD release.

Charts

Chart Position
Australian Kent Music Report[4] 7
Norway[5] 12
UK Albums Chart[6] 7

The album only reached number 7 in the UK album chart (and number 12 here in Norway), perhaps because most fans already owned most of the tracks on other releases. However, the album continued to sell reasonably well, and remained in print for many years. It was also the longest album (pre-1967) that the Beatles released, totaling almost 40 minutes of music. The mono pressing is somewhat of a rarity, and is missing in most people's collections.
