The 2016 America East Men's Soccer Tournament was the 21st edition of the tournament. It determined the Atlantic 10 Conference's automatic berth into the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship. The second-seeded Albany Great Danes won the Atlantic 10 title, besting the fifth-seeded Hartford, 10 in the championship match. Albany striker, Afonso Pinheiro, converted a penalty kick in the final minute to win the title for the Great Danes.[1] It was Albany's first-ever American East title.[2] The tournament was had no formal host and the higher-seeded teams hosted their respective tournament match, meaning that the final was contested in Albany, New York.[1]

Background

The UMass Lowell River Hawks were the regular season champions, amassing a record of 13–1–2 and a 5–1–1 conference record. The River Hawks were ranked 11th in the nation with their record. However, due to program transitioning from Division II to Division I, the program was ineligible to compete in any postseason tournaments.[3] The second best regular season team, Stony Brook, entered the tournament as the top seed. Defending tournament champions, Vermont Catamounts entered the tournament as the third-seed, and were eliminated by Albany in the semifinals.[4]
