Oceansize to zespół jeszcze w Polsce zupełnie nieznany, lecz na Wyspach Brytyjskich jest już o nim głośno po wydaniu trzech EP's, A Very Still Movement (2001), Relapse (2002) i All This Could Be Yours (2003) i niestrudzonej działalności koncertowej. W ciągu dwóch lat zdążył on wystąpić z Elbow, Lift To Experience, The Cooper Temple Clause, Cardiacs i Cave-In, a więc z pierwszą ligą nowego brytyjskiego rocka, a ostatnio - z reaktywowanymi, legendarnymi Sisters Of Mercy. Jednym słowem, Oceansize zdaje się być nową wielką nadzieją rocka z Manchesteru - miasta szczególnie zasłużonego dla tego gatunku muzyki. Są i tacy, którzy przepowiadają mu świetlaną karierę na miarę Radiohead. Wokalista i gitarzysta Mike Vennart w szczególnie melancholijnych momentach rzeczywiście może nieco kojarzyć się z Thomem Yorke'em, a i korzenie obu tych grup sięgają głęboko do tradycji Pink Floyd. Różnica jest jednak zasadnicza, bo Oceansize nie tylko definiuje na nowo progresywny rock, ale i wzbogaca go z wyobraźnią o elementy zaczerpnięte z muzyki Jane's Addiction, My Bloody Valentine, Verve czy Tool, a w ostrzejszych momentach, jak w You Wish czy Amputee, wykazuje wręcz postgrunge'owe odchylenie. Trzy gitary rzeczywiście gwarantują, gdy trzeba - jak choćby w Catalyst - potężne prawie heavymetalowe brzmienie. Równie ważny zdaje się być wpływ renomowanego producenta Chrisa Sheldona (Foo Fighters, Feeder) na ostateczny, dobrze wyważony kształt albumu Effloresce. Wprawdzie przeważają atmosferyczne, przesycone egzystencjalnym smutkiem kompozycje (One Day All This Could Be Yours, Rinsed, Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs, czy poruszająca aż do bólu Saturday Morning Breakfast Show), ich przeciwwagę stanowią utwory eksplodujące gitarowym hałasem, przydające albumowi oczekiwanej od rocka drapieżności. Effloresce będzie jednym z tych albumów, które sporo namieszają w nadchodzącym sezone jesiennym i w dorocznych ankietach na najlepszy debiut 2003 r. Co do tego nie ma wątpliwości.

Oceansize is a perfect name for this Manchester-based rock group. I hear a whole lot of Pearl Jam's Ten in Effloresce. The way that PJ was able to ebb and flow the music on their classic album is something other bands have never been able to pull off. That is until now. Oceansize boasts a three guitar attack and rarely a vocal to be found. I couldn't find a line-up of the band so I don't know how many people are actually in Oceansize but that makes this listen a little more mysterious. "You Wish" is one of the few tracks featuring gentle vocals. "Amputee" is one of the more accessible tracks on the album with the vocals right out front. They sort of approach this music in a Cave In sort of progressive rock way. A little dramatic at times but it's about time that good drama made it's way back to rock music. There are moments when I can definitely hear other influences like Jane's Addiction and Pink Floyd with the vocalist at times, sounding like a reserved Mike Patton. Effloresce takes me back to the time when people took a journey when they listened to an album. I was listening to this at work and found myself shutting the door and turning up the volume to get the full effect. My afternoon was gone in no time. I gave Effloresce a 4 star rating but I think in time, this album will get better and better. I'm on my 4th listen now and I plan to keep going until it wears out.

Braucht die Musikwelt wirklich eine weitere Band, die den Hörer mit auf eine Achterbahn-Fahrt der Gefühle nimmt, die dem Hörer das Schöne und den Schrecken musikalisch vor Augen führt? Wenn es - wie im Falle von Oceansize aus Manchester, England - gut gemacht ist, warum eigentlich nicht? Die Band selbst gibt ihre Einflüsse mit Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Can, Cardiacs, Jane's Addiction, (frühen) Verve, Swervedriver, The Beach Boys und Tortoise an - eine gute Liste, die ihnen auch Vergleiche mit Tool, Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine oder auch Mansun eingebracht hat. Die Rede ist hier also von epischen Song-Strukturen majestätischen Ausmaßes, mit vielen Instrumental-Passagen, aber auch traditionellen, kurzen Rock-Teilen - dazu Mike Vennarts vielseitiger Gesang. Und das alles auf einem - von Chris Scheldon produzierten - Debüt-Album, auf dem wirklich der komplett zur Verfügung stehende Raum genutzt wurde. Platz brauchen die Oceansize-Songs, vor allem einen Platz in der Musikwelt. Den haben sie sich verdient.
