"In The Flash - Live" to pierwsza od lat muzyczna propozycja założyciela Pink Floyd, jeśli nie liczyć wydania koncertowego "The Wall". Na solowej płycie znalazła się jedna premierowa kompozycja "In The Candle". Rogera Watersa można uznać za wielkiego pechowca w światowym show-biznesie. Przez wiele lat, po odejściu Syda Barretta, stał na czele Pink Floyd, jednego z najważniejszych rockowych zespołów. Przełom lat 70. i 80. był już okresem napięć. Sukces "The Wall" i "Final Cut" łączył się z rozpadem zespołu. Waters miał już wtedy gotowy materiał na solową płytę "Pros And Cons Of Hitch Hiking". Nagrana m.in. z udziałem Erica Claptona, była znakomita, cieszyła się ogromnym powodzeniem. Szybko jednak satysfakcję z solowych sukcesów zakłócił konflikt z kolegami z grupy. Waters uważał, że jego odejście z zespołu oznacza koniec działalności. Gilmour, Mason i Wright chcieli działać dalej. Praw do nazwy dochodzili w sądzie. Waters przegrał sprawę i stał się niemym świadkiem komercyjnych sukcesów kolegów. Dziś, tak jak The Rolling Stones, występują na wielkich stadionach, tymczasem Waters swoją publicznością może wypełnić kilkutysięczne sale koncertowe. Rzecz jasna, nie wielkością publiki mierzy się klasę artysty, z pewnością jednak można mówić o ukaranej pysze Watersa. Po przesłuchaniu albumu "In The Flash - Live" można sobie zadać pytanie, czy warto mu było kruszyć kopie z kolegami. Na dwóch płytach zaprezentował przecież nagrania z "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Wish You Were Here", "Animals" i "The Wall". Wykonują je również Floydzi, równie perfekcyjnie. Pozytywną odpowiedź przynosi dopiero wersja live "Dogs" i wspaniałej psychodelicznej kompozycji "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun". Zwraca uwaga długa sekwencja z albumu "Amused To Death". Płyta studyjna była nieznośnie manieryczna, wręcz nudna. Cztery kompozycje zagrane osobno nabrały nowego wyrazu. Powstała piękna minisuita, bardzo kameralna, wyszeptana przez Watersa w "It's Miracle", dynamiczna w "Perfect Sense" i "The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range". Na zakończenie słyszymy premierowy "In The Candle", refleksyjny blues z rozlewistymi partiami gitary i monumentalnymi chórkami czarnoskórych wokalistek. Ich płyty stały się trwałym elementem muzycznego dzieła Watersa.

As "In the Flesh - Live" confirms, Pink Floyd fans can still get to hear their favourite numbers sung by the man who originated much of the band's songbook. Roger Waters took his latest show around a number of American stadiums in the summer of 2000, including a generous helping of Floyd numbers from 1968 to 83, and a selection from his subsequent solo albums. Tracks from The Wall make up the largest proportion of the concert, its angst lessened when interspersed among the more prog-rock ethos of the earlier 70s. His bass playing secure, Waters' voice has survived the passing of time reasonably well. He has the benefit of an emotional call-and-response with Katie Kissoon in "Mother", and serviceable back-up from Doyle Bramhall II, who overdoes the histrionics in recreating Dave Gilmour's guitar parts. The backing band is a class act, with Snowy White and Andy Fairweather Low trusty and responsive guitarists, and a rhythm section underpinned by Graham Broad's solid drumming. One for long-time fans, but a classy presentation in the best Floyd traditions.
