Jest rok 2300. Ludzkość potrafi przemierzać najdalsze zakątki galaktyki. Powstają nowe kolonie i koalicje planetarne. Jedną z takich kolonii jest Kibi. W stoczniach tej planety wybudowany zostaje „Amaterasu” - kosmiczny okręt bojowy. Podstawą i myślą przewodnią jego stworzenia było kształcenie kadetów „Akademii Obrony” – na przyszłych dowódców i oficerów podobnych jednostek. W czasie powrotu z pierwszej misji szkoleniowej kadeci dowiadują się o wybuchu wojny pomiędzy ich ojczyzną a Koalicją Narodów Henrietta. Koalicja zniszczyła jednostki należące do Kibi (między innymi eskortowiec „Maizru” na którym służył ojciec jednej z głównych bohaterek - Hisaki Arei). Wydarzenie to przyczyniło się do poddania planety Kibi i przyłączenia się do Narodów Henrietta. Jednakże kadeci wspólnie postanawiają nie poddawać się bez walki. Pod wpływem patriotycznego impulsu wpadają na genialny, aczkolwiek zwariowany pomysł. Kontaktują się z Galaxy Network (Galaktyczna Telewizja – coś jak bardzo rozbudowany CNN), aby ten w zamian za news’y z pierwszej ręki, w dodatku na żywo, został ich sponsorem. Transakcja dochodzi do skutku i nasi bohaterowie stają się posiadaczami „Amaterasu”. Teraz już nic nie szkodzi aby podjąć walkę ze znienawidzonym wrogiem. Jak będzie rozwijał się alians militarno-telewizyjny i czy kadetom uda się oswobodzić rodzinną planetę? Śledźcie kolejne odcinki a z pewnością się dowiecie. The war now begins. (...) |

English description
At first, Starship Operators showed a lot of promise in a very subtle sort of way. The first episode didn't get too ahead of itself in laying out a plot and introducing the important characters, choosing to take its time and establish a firm foundation for the anime. "It's slow," I told myself, but I am generally very tolerant of slowness....or so I thought. The primary problem (among the many other smaller ones) with Starship Operators is that it never really picks up from the tepid pace that it is introduced with. Each episode is told in the same bland, meandering, sluggish style until the viewer's time has mysteriously vanished in a haze. There is a two-episode arc where the Amaterasu touches down on a demoralized planet that features some relatively exciting action, but the rest of the series is just minute after heavy-handed minute of politics and science. Don't get me wrong; a healthy dose of political jargon and technobabble can add a lot of character to any anime's universe.
Unfortunately, the politics here are primarily irrelevant, simply because the characters are so far removed from them. We never fear the machinations of the evil Planet Bad People simply because the Amaterasu and its rogue crew seem essentially invincible. I never once doubted whether or not our protagonist would be able strategize her way to victory. I say strategize and not combat simply because the aerial warfare in Starship Operators is nothing but the characters talking for ten minutes. Granted, 'real-life space fights' are sure to take a lot longer than the fantastical dogfights featured in something like Star Wars, but there's no justifying the somniferous excuses for battles we get here. The Amaterasu never fires more than one shot...two if we're lucky. Meh. (...)
