Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington - afroamerykański pianista, lider big bandu, kompozytor, wybitna postać w muzyce Stanów Zjednoczonych (nie tylko jazzowej).
Urodzony w Waszyngtonie . Jego rodzice pochodzili z czarnej klasy średniej. W domu otrzymał bardzo dobre wychowanie i maniery, stąd już w szkole nazywano go "Duke" (ang. książę). Jego zainteresowania jazzem były jednak nie w smak rodzicom. Uciekł z domu i w 1922 wraz z zespołem, w którym grał, przyjechał do Nowego Jorku będącego w owym czasie głównym ośrodkiem jazzu. Wtedy zespół nie odniósł sukcesu. Spróbowali jeszcze rok później jako "The Washingtonians", tym razem z większym powodzeniem. Stary lider grupy próbował oszukiwać muzyków i stracił ich zaufanie - wtedy kierownictwo objął "Duke". Udało im się dostać kontrakt w klubie w Harlemie. W 1928 znaleźli zatrudnienie w słynnym Cotton Clubie.
W tym czasie grali u niego m. in. Johnny Hodges (saksofon altowy), Barney Bigard (klarnet), Charles "Cootie" Wiliams (trąbka), Juan Tizol (puzon wentylowy).

The first 10 tracks appear here in their original monaural sound, and they're an authentic account of the early years of Ellington's marvelous band--with the rich, smooth saxophone textures of Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney, the soaring muted trumpets of Cootie Williams and Rex Stewart, and the unadorned musicality of Ivie Anderson's voice.
