Wielu artystów pragnie, by ich twórczość określano mianem ‘międzyplanetarnego fenomenu’. Ale włosko-angielski kolektyw Planet Funk, w skład którego wchodzą producenci – muzycy Sergio Della Monica, Alex Neri, Domenico GG Canu i Marco Baroni, śmiało może szczycić się takim osiągnięciem. To już prawdziwi mistrzowie funk – w najszerszym i najbardziej błyskotliwym znaczeniu tego słowa.
Kiedy w 1999 roku spotkał się z Sergio i Domenico (GG) podczas Miami Winter Music Conference, okazało się, że ich pomysły doskonale się uzupełniają. W niespełna rok po tym spotkaniu stworzyli projekt Planet Funk, który szybko zyskał sobie szacunek u takich nawet sław jak Pete Tong, DJ Harvey, Adam Freeland czy Deep Dish i Hybid. Sobie tylko zawdzięczają jednak niesamowity fenomen – mimo otwartości na różne gatunki i wpływy, ich muzyka nadal pozostaje niezwykle spójna. Jako jedni z nielicznych, nie boją się także umieszczać w swoich utworach poważnych, społecznych kwestii: „Under The Rain” inspirowany pieśniami Rdzennych Amerykanów ma wyraźnie ekologiczną wymowę, a tytuł zaczerpnięto z powieści Richarda Brighta, pisarza wysuwającego teorie o relacjach międzyludzkich. Taka tematyka piosenek to oczywiście podniesienie sporego wyzwania: „Muzyka taneczna przyzwyczaiła nas już do tekstów typu „Baby baby baby, shake your ass” itd., ale nie zapominamy, że taką muzykę tworzą także New Order, Massive Attack, Leftfield czy The Chemical Brothers. Wiele osób zapyta – jak możemy się z nimi równać? Ale wydaje mi się, że tworząc tak oryginalne brzmienia, łatwiej unikamy klasyfikacji i jesteśmy na najlepszej drodze, żeby zostać zapamiętanymi.”
Nie ustępując w swojej niezależności, jednocześnie w dalszym ciągu podbijają listy przebojów. Wiele nominacji i nagród, jakie są im przyznawane świadczy o tym, że mamy do czynienia z grupą, która zamierza jeszcze nieźle namieszać. W dalszym ciągu ewoluują, jeżeli spojrzeć choćby na ich występy na żywo. Na pewno nie jest to show, jakiego oczekiwalibyście po zespole wykonującym muzykę taneczną.
„Muzyka jest tym czym chciałbym zajmować się jak najdłużej. Dlatego tak bardzo pragnę się rozwijać. Nie chcę utknąć w jednej formie do końca swoich dni. Robienie czegoś nowego to ryzyko, oczywiście biorę to pod uwagę. Ale nie boję się żadnych wyzwań. Taki już jestem, tacy są też wszyscy członkowie Planet Funk.”

When Sergio, Marco, GG and Alex decided to take their time with a first album, there might have been some justification for scepticism. Traditionally, a dancefloor hit leads to a rushed album cash in. Who knew whether it was worth spending two years in the studio, perfecting the marriage of the digital and human, working with different singers, expanding genres and gradually evolving into a fully functioning live band complete with guitars
But if it was a risk to aim high and hold tight to ideals, then it more than paid off. Last year they emerged into the Italian sunlight and found themselves with five singles in the charts. They also won the Italian music industry award for best dance act, best newcomer and best band. Clearly someone out there appreciated their ambition. "The main reason we started, and went on to spend two years in the studio was that we felt that music needed to move forward, because we felt that everything was changing around us," says Sergio. "The world was changing and you feel the change. People who make music are privileged because you spend your life talking with people and in clubs and on the street, its part of what you do. We feel the change day by day, minute by minute. So at that time we were a little bit tired of our music and we needed to mix up the cards again.
