Na niektórych płytach z tej seri znajdziemy sporą dawkę hip-hopu (DJ Cam),electro (Tiga), house (Claude Young), techno (C.J. When Berlin's !K7 imprint first released its now legendary DJ Kicks album 10 years ago (a collection by CJ Bolland that painted all the colours of the techno map), it's doubtful it could have foreseen the success the mix series would go onto have. Admittedly, the idea behind the albums was a little bit more thought out than the majority of mixes which had proliferated the market by the mid-'90s. Whereas most were cheap (not in a bad way), disposable and absolutely of their time, the DJ Kicks sets had a bit more weight behind them. They saw DJ sets as a bona fide cultural art form and vowed to give full reign to that impulse. In this sense, they have worked just as well as a home listening activity, as they have when you,ve been looking for something to kick-start your weekend's thrills and spills. And while the DJ Kicks series has gone onto document the times in which they were released, they have also endured. Whether you pick up a copy of DJ Cam's turntable deconstruction from 1997; Thievery Corporation's late night moods from 1999 or even Erlend Oye's none-more-leftfield, kitchen sink and all set from 2004, they all still make sense today. What's more, the DJ Kicks insignia has become shorthand for a guarantee of quality, a mark that shows that what you're getting is very best available in its field. Mitte der 90er startete K7 mit der Kollektion CJ Bollands eine Compilation-Reihe, mit deren Erfolgsgeschichte in dieser Form niemand rechnen konnte. Ein Jahrzehnt später hat sich "!K7 DJ-Kicks" als Markenzeichen etabliert, das allein schon deswegen für Qualität steht, weil hier das DJ-Set als das respektiert wird, das es ist: eine Kunstform. Zum Jubiläum - zudem die 25. Ausgabe - bündelt K7 14 exklusive Tracks und zeigt so einige der zahllosen Facetten elektronischer Musik.
Die "Exclusives" starten schlicht phänomenal. Kruder & Dorfmeister schicken zu swingendem Beat ihr "Black Baby" auf die Bahn, die Stimmung ist verträumt, entspannt und doch alles andere als einschläfernd: Musik, zu der man nachts ausgedehnte Autofahrten unternehmen möchte. Die Thievery Corporation trifft den selben Nerv. Der Bass verleiht der Percussion in "It Takes A Thief" ein solides Fundament. Das Resultat wirkt gelassen, keineswegs aber öde.
Die Leistung eines DJ Cam lässt mich - wie schon tausendmal zuvor - in Ehrfurcht erstarren. Er packt harte Vocalsamples und Scratches, energiegeladene Pianoloops, elektronisches Fiepen und Wortfetzen in einlullende Melodien und versieht das Ganze mit ordentlich Rhythmus. Sein fast achtminütiges "Bronx Theme" verdeutlicht einmal mehr, wofür man diesem Mann eigentlich rund um die Uhr die Hände küssen müsste.
Terranovas "Contact" legt mit hektischen Sirenen und frickeligem Beat erheblich mehr Tempo vor. Kid Locos durchdachte Strukturen erweisen sich als zu vielschichtig, um jemals zu langweilen. Leicht schräger Gesang in "High Jazz" erinnert an die Stimme Jamie Lidells. Bis hierher gebe ich die glatte Bestnote.
Vikter Duplaix bricht den Zauber - zumindest in meinen Ohren. Ein an sich ordentlicher Track fällt gegen das bisher Gebotene vollkommen ab. Der Reim "sensuality" auf "sexuality" wäre mir vermutlich auch dann auf den Keks gegangen, wäre er nicht von einer nervtötenden Stimme in gefühlter Endloswiederholung eingesetzt worden. Man möge mir vergeben - ich mag dieses Stück nicht. (Ich mochte es sogar so wenig, dass ich noch beim nachfolgenden Song an meinem Ärger zu nagen hatte und gar kein rechtes Vergnügen an Playgroups Interpretation von "Behind The Wheel" fand. Erst bei Tigas vergnüglicher Nelly-Verwurstung ging's wieder einigermaßen.)
Zum Ende hin gibt es noch ein bisschen Elektropop (Erlend Øye, Annie) sowie einige mehr (Glimmers) oder weniger (Chicken Lips) interessante Dancefloor-Tracks, die sich sämtlich eher zur Beschallung eines Clubs als des heimischen Sofas anbieten. Die Großartigkeit der ersten Hälfte wird leider nicht ansatzweise wieder erreicht, weswegen das Jubiläums-Bonbon lediglich das Prädikat "durchwachsen" verdient hat - aber auch damit stehen die "Exclusives" in der guten Tradition der vorangegangenen Ausgaben.
