The Gardner-Edgerton Unified School District (USD 231) is one of the major school districts in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Currently, the district comprises 1 high school, 3 middle schools, and 7 elementary schools. All but one school in the district, an elementary school, is located in Gardner, KS while the elementary school is located in Edgerton, KS.

Administration

The Gardner-Edgerton Unified School District is currently under the leadership of Superintendent, Pam Stranathan.[1]

The Gardner-Edgerton Board of Education is currently under the leadership of President Mark Grannell, and Vice President James Repshire. Other school board members include Mary Herbert, Mary Nelson, Rob Shippy, Tresa Boden, and Brad Chandler. The Board Clerk is Lisa Berg.[4]

Being located in the rapidly growing southern portion of Johnson County, USD 231 has had to manage the challenges of exploding enrollment numbers since the late 1990s. The district built the current high school in 2000. The building has been expanded several times since opening. Every school in the district has been built or renovated since 2000. A new bond issue was passed in January 2012 which will finance the construction of new campus for a third middle school and new elementary school, upgrades to the District Activity Center, and construction of a new Multi-purpose Athletic Center on the high school campus. USD 231 has purchased multiple tracts of land throughout the district to construct future schools. The bond issue for vote in 2016 proposes an expansion to the high school to increase capacity and meet the growing student population.[5]

Gardner-Edgerton, a fast-growing district of about 5,200 students in Johnson County, had the rating on its general obligation debt reduced from AA- to A+ in late March "due to the deterioration of the district's nonrestrictive cash position to $0 from $3.3 million," according to a report filed by Smaardyk.[6]

The downgrade comes at a bad time for Gardner, where voters recently approved a $75 million bond issue for new elementary and middle schools and additions to the high school. Some of the money will go to revamping athletic facilities where Bubba Starling, Nebraska quarterback recruit and Kansas City Royals first-round draft pick, starred until he graduated last year.[6]

The interest and insurance on that debt will now be significantly higher than when the district was rated AA-.[6]
